World Map antique 1640

Nova Totius Terrarum Orbis Geographica ac Hydrographica Tabula auct: Guiljelmo Blaeuw [and] Africae nova descriptio [and] Americae nova Tabula [and] Asia noviter delineata [and] Europa recens descripta.
World 'Nova Totius Terrarum Orbis': Shirley describes this world map as a 'classic single-sheet world map on Mercator's projection... celebrated as one of the supreme examples of the map maker's art'. 'The map has been expertly reduced from the Blaeu's large world map of 1605. The engraver Josua van den Ende signed in the lower right corner. The most striking characteristic are the superb border decorations. Along the top are allegorical of the sun and the moon and the known five planets - Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. Down the sides are, on the left, four panels illustrating the elements (Fire, Water, Air and Earth), and on the right, the four seasons. Along the bottom are seven vignettes showing the seven ancient wonders of the world: the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, the Colossus over the harbour at Rhodos, the Pyramids, the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus at Caria, the Temple of Diane, the Statue of Jupiter, and the conical lighthouse of Alexandria.' (R. Shirley, The Mapping of the World, Entry 255). The map has decorative cartouches for the title, dedication and explanation, two spheres for the north and south poles, a compass roses and numerous ships and sea monsters. It appeared in the Blaeu Atlas from 1630 until 1658. The map was replaced by a two hemispheres world map prepared by Willem's son Joan from 1662 onwards

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT PRODUCTS WE SELL?

We sell high quality reproductions of old maps, vintage photos, and vintage posters. We have maps of locations from all over the world, covering a range from the 15th century through the early 20th century. Our vintage photo and poster collection is a bit smaller than our map collection, but we wanted to include some of our our favorite vintage photos and posters in our product line. The photos and posters generally come from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

No, we only sell reproductions.

WHAT KIND OF MATERIALS DO YOU USE IN YOUR PRINTS?

WHAT SIZES ARE AVAILABLE FOR YOUR PRODUCTS?

Most of our products are offered in a range of sizes. You will be able to specify the size when you add the item to your shopping cart. When possible, we try to offer sizes that match standard size frames (11"x14", 16"x20", etc.), but since many antique maps and prints were printed with different proportions than modern standard sizes, this is not always possible. If you want to purchase a print in a size that's not listed on our site, please contact us, we may be able to print the item in a different size for you.

DOES THE SIZE LISTED FOR A PRINT INCLUDE A BORDER?

All of our prints come with additional blank borders of 0.2", unless you specify otherwise. The blank border is useful if you plan to frame the print with a mat since it gives sufficient overlap between the print and the mat. If you plan to frame your print without a mat, we can easily omit the borders for you, just include a note when you checkout requesting no borders. The available sizes listed for each print indicate the exact size of the printed area, and do not include the size of the borders. The blank borders we add are in addition to these size.

DO YOU OFFER FRAMING SERVICES?

At this time we do not offer any framing services. All of our prints come without any framing or mounting.

CAN I PURCHASE A PRINT IN A CUSTOM SIZE?

Yes. If you need a print in a specific size, please contact us to see if it's possible to print the item at the size you need.

I like one of your products, but I wish it were darker/lighter/yellower/etc. Can you alter the tone and color of a print?

Absolutely. If you want to alter the color or tone of a print, contact us and let us know what you'd like. In most cases we can make the alteration for free, though if you need something complex we may charge an extra fee for image preparation.
